Abstract

Overuse of prophylactic veterinary antibiotics facilitates horizontal gene transfer of multi-drug resistance elements. Isolating Salmonella and Escherichia coli strains from intensive poultry wastewater facilities, we identify broad-spectrum beta-lactamase resistance markers requiring enhanced biosecurity legislation.
